Tessie P. Liu is a Professor of History at Northwestern University, specializing in Modern European History with a focus on France and its global Francophonie, alongside Global History. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (1987). Her research bridges gender studies, race, colonialism, and the politics of beauty. She is affiliated with the Gender & Sexuality Studies Program and serves on the executive board of the Social Science History Association.
Her academic work spans studies on anti-racism in the French and Haitian Revolutions, gender dynamics in artisanal households, and intersections of race and class. Current projects include exploring race and beauty politics. She has edited special issues for Feminist Studies and Gender and History, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship.
Liu teaches courses such as “Gender, War, and Revolution in the Twentieth Century” and “Gender, Race, and the Politics of Beauty,” integrating historical methodologies with contemporary debates. Her editorial and administrative roles include directing the Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and serving as Director of Graduate Studies.
