Terry Kirby is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London, within the Media, Communications and Cultural Studies department. He has been actively involved in academia since 2008 and currently convenes the MA Journalism program, having shaped its curriculum for over a decade. His academic work is closely tied to the development of EastLondonLines, a student training news website.
Kirby's research interests revolve around the transformation of journalism, particularly in digital platforms, the future of local news ecosystems, and the interplay between police-crime reporting and public perception. He also explores consumer journalism, popular culture's media representation, and professional pathways for emerging journalists.
His publications include The Newsmongers - A History of Tabloid Journalism (2024), analyzing the evolution of tabloid media, and The Trials of the Baroness (1991), a true crime narrative intersecting with legal and social history. Both works reflect his expertise in crime reporting and media ethics.
As a former crime correspondent for The Independent, Kirby has covered high-profile cases such as the Hungerford massacre and Lockerbie disaster, while also contributing to major events like Princess Diana's death and 9/11. His career spans General Election coverage since 1979 and includes a notable wine column (2011-2023) that blended journalism with cultural commentary.
