Terry Furey

Terry Furey is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is affiliated with key research centers including the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD), Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC), and the Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility (CEHS). His research focuses on chromatin dynamics, gene regulation, and their roles in diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and environmental toxicogenomics. He collaborates with clinicians and scientists to integrate genomic data, develop computational tools, and study genetic influences on health.

Research interests include understanding chromatin architecture in disease contexts, such as IBD-related inflammation in intestinal cells and ozone exposure effects on lung macrophages. The lab develops methods like ROCCO for analyzing open chromatin regions across samples, published in Bioinformatics (2023).

Lab members Val, Meaghan, Nina, and Nolan presented work at ASHG 2023, highlighting ongoing studies in IBD genetics, ancestral population representation, and environmental toxicants. The lab actively recruits trainees at all levels through the BCB PhD Program.
