Terry (Traolach) Brugha is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Leicester and Consultant Psychiatrist. Trained at University College Dublin and King's College London's MRC Social Psychiatry Unit, his seminal contributions include developing the List of Threatening Experiences—the world's most widely used measure of stressful life events—and conducting pioneering national surveys on autism epidemiology in adults and the elderly.
His research program focuses on:
- Adult and geriatric autism spectrum disorder epidemiology
- Clinical trials for perinatal depression prevention
- Neuropsychiatry assessment instrument development
As chair of the WHO committee revising the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), he integrates autism and ADHD diagnostics. Previously Secretary General of the International Federation of Psychiatric Epidemiology, he maintains clinical psychiatry practice alongside academic leadership.
