Tero Montonen is an Associate Professor at the Business School within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies at the University of Eastern Finland. His research focuses on innovation management, academic entrepreneurship, and healthcare innovation. Key projects include the Neuro-Innovation (2021–2026) and DATASLEEP (2021–2025) initiatives, exploring remote patient monitoring and digital health solutions. He co-leads the NOVA Neuro-innovation research team and the Innovation Management research group. Montonen holds a PhD in Business Administration (2014) and has published extensively on academic spin-offs, health-tech commercialization, and leadership strategies.
His research interests span innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurial identity, and policy innovation for high-skilled immigrants. Notable contributions include the Elgar Encyclopedia of Innovation Management (2025) and studies on hybrid identity work among academic entrepreneurs. Montonen collaborates across disciplines, bridging health sciences, business, and social policy. Current projects address barriers to healthcare access for aging populations and immigrant communities, emphasizing participatory research methodologies.
Montonen’s work emphasizes practical applications, such as developing empathetic innovation frameworks and evaluating growth-oriented incubation criteria. He has advised on policy briefs for integrating high-skilled immigrants into Finnish work ecosystems and led studies on the dynamics of collaboration in health innovation networks. His teaching and research highlight the interplay between emotional intelligence, organizational culture, and sustainable value creation.
