Terje Lohndal

Terje Lohndal is the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) (2025–). He holds a Professorship in English Linguistics at NTNU (on leave) and is a Professor II at the Centre for Language, Brain and Learning (C-LaBL) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway (2015–). He also serves as Vice President and Class President for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters (DNVA) (2021–2025), and chairs the Portfolio Board for Breakthrough Research at the Research Council of Norway (2024–2027).

His research focuses on grammatical structures across languages, multilingualism (particularly heritage languages and language mixing), language acquisition, science theory, and the societal role of humanities. He leads the ForMAAL research group and the GenVAC project (Research Council of Norway), investigating grammatical gender variation and language change in Norwegian dialects.

Key contributions include studies on heritage language syntax, grammatical gender decline in dialects, and the theoretical implications of multilingual grammars. His work bridges formal syntax, empirical methods, and sociolinguistic perspectives. Notable awards include the Research Council of Norway's Outstanding Research Award (2018) and the Nils Klim Prize (2014).
