Teresia Svensson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Linköping University's Theme Environmental Change (TEMAM), where she currently serves as Deputy Head of Department. She has been actively involved in both research and education at the university since 2006.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Biogeochemistry from Linköping University (2006) with a thesis titled 'Chlorine transport in a small catchment.' Prior to this position, she completed postdoctoral work at the University of British Columbia and served as a guest researcher at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies.
Teresia's research focuses on two primary areas: natural halogenation processes in ecosystems and quality improvement in higher education. Her groundbreaking work has demonstrated that chlorine plays an active role in biogeochemical cycles, challenging previous assumptions that halogenated compounds in nature were exclusively industrial products. Specifically, her research shows that natural chlorination of organic matter occurs extensively in various ecosystems, particularly in terrestrial systems, and that vegetation plays a crucial role in chlorine accumulation and turnover.
Her recent publications reveal a strong focus on chlorine distribution in different ecosystems, the role of soil characteristics in chlorination processes, and educational research examining information literacy and problem-based learning in environmental science education. The interdisciplinary nature of her work bridges environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, and educational science.
Teresia has held several leadership positions in education, including Program Manager for both the Bachelor's program in Environmental Science and the Master's program in Science for Sustainable Development at Linköping University. Notably, the Master's program was top-ranked by the Swedish University Chancellor's Office (UKÄ) in 2013 and received the highest grade.
She has supervised doctoral students including Johannes Kikuchi and collaborates closely with researchers such as Professor David Bastviken and Professor Henrik Kylin. Her educational work focuses on student-centered learning methods, integration of theory and practice, problem-based learning, information literacy, and interdisciplinary environmental science education.
