Temple Northup is the Director of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU). He previously served as Director of the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston and co-directed the Gulf Coast Food Project. His academic background includes a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an MA from Syracuse University, and a BA from Wake Forest University.
His research focuses on media psychology, media effects, implicit cognition, and attitude formation, with emphasis on food marketing and consumer behavior. Notable projects include analyzing televised food advertising targeting children and exploring how sexual appeals in social media interact with cultural differences.
Award highlights include the 2020 Campanile Foundation grant for migration webinars and the 2019 Provost 50-in-5 Award for U.S.-Taiwan social media research. He has published extensively in journals like the International Journal of Communication and Media Psychology, with over 180 episodes of TV writing experience prior to academia.
Northup’s teaching spans multimedia journalism, documentary storytelling, and quantitative research methods. He is passionate about internationalizing education through faculty-led programs abroad and hosts global communication conferences. His personal interests include culinary experimentation, travel, and supporting the San Diego Padres.
