معرفی
Tejal Desai serves as the Sorensen Family Dean of Engineering and Professor of Engineering at Brown University, leading the School of Engineering while maintaining an active research program in biomedical innovation.
Her academic credentials include a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University (1994) and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering jointly awarded by UCSF and UC Berkeley (1998).
Desai's pioneering research integrates materials science, cell biology, and nanotechnology to develop advanced therapeutic platforms. Her work focuses on overcoming biological barriers through micro/nanotechnology-enabled delivery systems, with significant contributions to tissue engineering and pharmacological interventions. Current projects emphasize immune cell modulation and biomaterials design for disease treatment.
Analysis of her publication record reveals consistent innovation at the engineering-biology interface, with recent work demonstrating sophisticated control of immune responses through DNA-based biomaterials. Her research trajectory shows increasing emphasis on translational applications of nanotechnology for precision medicine.
Major recognitions include:
- National Academy of Medicine (2015) and National Academy of Inventors (2019) elections
- Technology Review's Top 100 Young Innovators and Popular Science's Brilliant 10
- Dawson Biotechnology Award and multiple society fellowships (AIMBE, BMES, etc.)
- UCSF Chancellor's Award for Advancement of Women and AWIS Judith Poole Award
As a dedicated mentor and institutional leader, Desai chairs Brown's Differences Matter Executive Committee while advocating nationally as President of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Her outreach initiatives with Lawrence Hall of Science, PBS, and UN Women have created impactful STEM education programs focused on nanotechnology and engineering diversity.
Her research group maintains active collaborations across Brown's engineering and medical communities, with ongoing projects in immune-modulating biomaterials and next-generation drug delivery platforms.
