Tasneem Khambaty, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), affiliated with the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Her work focuses on cardiovascular behavioral medicine, examining how psychosocial, cognitive, and biobehavioral factors influence cardiometabolic health outcomes in at-risk populations such as older adults, minorities, and those with socioeconomic challenges. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, sociologists, and epidemiologists at UMBC, the University of Maryland School of Medicine, NIH, and other institutions.
Dr. Khambaty’s research interests include exploring depression/anxiety symptoms, socioeconomic status, and cognitive risk factors for diabetes and metabolic syndrome. She investigates health disparities in Hispanic/Latino and African American populations, often using longitudinal epidemiological datasets. Her lab, the Cognition, Affect and Cardiometabolic HEalth Lab (CACHE Lab), located in Sondheim 401, emphasizes training students in research design, manuscript writing, and grant applications. She currently accepts graduate students for Fall 2026, encouraging independent research and external funding pursuit. Undergraduate students can also engage in protocol development and publication activities through direct email contact.
Her publications span over a decade, with recent work analyzing stress, acculturation, bilingualism, and diet in relation to cardiometabolic health. While no explicit awards are listed, her contributions highlight a focus on interdisciplinary collaborations to address systemic health challenges. Advising and grant activities are central to her role, with lab members participating in both observational studies and community-based interventions.
Dr. Khambaty’s affiliations include the Human Services Psychology/Behavioral Medicine graduate program at UMBC and partnerships with NIH-funded initiatives such as the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL). Her research often integrates sociocultural factors, biomarkers, and behavioral interventions to understand health outcomes in marginalized communities.
