Taryrn T.C. Brown serves as Assistant Professor at the University of Florida's School of Teaching and Learning since 2023, previously holding a Clinical Assistant Professor position from 2019-2023. She maintains active affiliations with the Collaborative for Equity in Education and Education Policy Research Center, focusing on systemic educational transformation.
Her academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Educational Theory and Practice with Critical Studies emphasis from the University of Georgia (2018), an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from UNC Greensboro (2009), and a B.A. in Media Studies and African American Studies from the same institution (2007).
Dr. Brown's research interrogates racial inequities through Black girlhood studies, critical race theory, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. She examines spatial justice in educational geographies, develops anti-deficit frameworks for mathematics education, and centers Black mothers' knowledge in curriculum design. Her work consistently bridges academic scholarship with community-based action, particularly regarding trauma-informed care for Black girls.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a cohesive trajectory: evolving from foundational studies on Black teenage mothers' schooling experiences (2017) to sophisticated interdisciplinary frameworks connecting womanist geographies, grief studies, and freedom school pedagogies (2022-2023). This progression demonstrates increasing methodological complexity while maintaining focus on liberatory education for marginalized communities.
Her honors include:
- Rosser Educator Excellence Award (2022)
- Teacher of the Year (2021) and Mentor of the Year (2022)
- Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow (2021-present)
- Mellon Foundation's Ethnic Studies Educators Academy
- Women Pioneers in Education Scholarship (2016)
Dr. Brown has secured over $1.3 million in grant funding as Co-PI, including Gates Foundation awards for Algebra Nation ($999,997) and multiple Children's Trust of Alachua County grants for CDF Freedom Schools. Her projects consistently center racial justice through initiatives like the Matrix of Anti-Racism across Curriculum (MARC) and Black Educators Reading Group.
She co-leads the Collaborative for Equity in Education which implements Freedom School programs in Alachua County, while actively participating in the Black Educators Reading Group to advance critical race literacy among local educators.
