Taryn Richardson

Taryn Richardson is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuropsychiatry & Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia, specializing in the Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation and Counselor Education from The University of Iowa, an M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling, and a B.S. in Psychology from South Carolina State University. Her certifications include CRC (Certified Rehabilitation Counselor) and NCC (National Certified Counselor).

Dr. Richardson’s research focuses on professional identity development, leadership and advocacy in counseling, psychosocial work conditions, and supporting youth with disabilities. Her work emphasizes positive psychology and the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. She has contributed to over 8 peer-reviewed publications and numerous presentations on topics such as technology-assisted supervision, virtue-based adaptation models, and disability advocacy.

Her professional experience includes collaborating with colleges and universities to implement student prevention services and supporting transition-aged youth with intellectual/cognitive disabilities in academic settings. She actively engages in community outreach and has presented at national conferences including the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the National Council on Rehabilitation Education.

Her academic contributions also include book chapters on group career counseling practices and curricular innovations in counselor education. Dr. Richardson’s work bridges clinical practice, research, and educational advocacy, particularly in underserved populations.
