Tariq Elahi is a Lecturer in Security and the Internet of Things at the School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. He is a faculty member of the Security, Privacy, and Trust (SecPrivTru) group and the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science (LFCS), and an affiliate member of the Institute for Computing Systems Architecture (ICSA). His research focuses on privacy, anonymity, and censorship resistance in digital communications, with applications in satellite networks, IoT, and end-to-end encrypted messaging systems.
His primary research interests include:
- Secure and Private Satellite Communications
- Traffic analysis attacks and metadata protection
- Anonymous Communication & Censorship Resistance (Tor, Mixnets)
- Data-Driven Privacy Systems Engineering
- Privacy-preserving Machine Learning and AI
- Embedding Privacy into Network Infrastructure
Recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward developing flexible, resilient, and scalable privacy-enhancing technologies, leveraging machine learning for traffic analysis and obfuscation, and extending anonymity systems to satellite and large-scale messaging platforms. His work is frequently published at top venues such as CCS, USENIX Security, PETS, and NDSS.
Notable scientific awards and grants include:
- National Research Centre Grant (£8.6M) as Co-I for "Protecting Citizens Online"
- New Investigator Award for "Feedback and Optimisation for Well-behaved Anonymous Communication Networks"
Tariq Elahi is actively involved in advising and research leadership. He is currently hiring PhD students for projects on satellite network security, interoperability of PETs, private AI, and censorship resistance. He also contributes to the academic community as co-chair of the FOCI workshop. His teaching includes Computer Security and Research Methods in Security, Privacy, and Trust.
He is affiliated with the following research groups and laboratories:
