Tara Abraham is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the College of Arts. Her research focuses on the history of biomedicine, psychiatry, and American science, with a particular emphasis on how medical education and disciplinary development intersected in the early 20th century. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (2000), an M.A. (1996), and a B.Sc. (1992) from McMaster University.
Her work explores the historical context of psychiatry's integration into medical curricula and the broader societal influences on medical expertise. Notable projects include a SSHRC-funded study examining Harvard Medical School's role in legitimizing psychiatry as a medical specialty. Abraham has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin, 2002–2004) and MIT's Dibner Institute. She is also President of the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science (2022–2025).
Abraham’s research spans cybernetics, neural network theory, and the intersection of science and technology. Her book, Rebel Genius: Warren S. McCulloch's Transdisciplinary Life in Science, examines the legacy of a pioneer in cybernetics and neuroscience. Her articles highlight themes like scientific styles in brain research and the cultural dimensions of disciplinary change.
