Tara A. Scully is an Associate Professor of Biology in the Department of Biological Sciences at The George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. She also serves as Director of Curriculum Development at the GW Global Food Institute and Director of the Sustainability Minor program. Dr. Scully teaches introductory biology and sustainability courses to non-science majors, with a focus on service learning and practical applications.
Dr. Scully's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from The George Washington University (2012)
- Masters of Forensic Science from The George Washington University (2004)
- Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University of New Orleans (1997)
Dr. Scully's research and teaching interests span multiple disciplines including biology education for non-science majors, sustainability, nutrition, and community engagement. Her scholarly work shows an evolution from developmental biology research on serotonin signaling in sea urchin embryogenesis to forensic science and ultimately to biology education and sustainability. She has developed innovative service-learning approaches that connect classroom learning with community needs.
Dr. Scully has received significant recognition for her work, including:

As an educator, Dr. Scully has authored the book 'Discovering Biology in the Lab: An Introductory Laboratory Manual' (2009, 2nd Edition 2012) and 'Why We Eat Food' (2016). She teaches seven different courses that integrate laboratory experiences with community service, including The Biology of Nutrition and Health, The Ecology and Evolution of Organisms, and several sustainability-focused courses. Her work with DMV area community partners on topics ranging from nutrition to invasive species demonstrates her commitment to engaged scholarship.
