Tanya Brown is an Assistant Professor of Marine Ecotoxicology at Simon Fraser University's Department of Biological Sciences. Her research focuses on understanding the impacts of environmental change and anthropogenic stressors on marine mammals and their ecosystems. Using cutting-edge techniques like chemical tracers, telemetry, and 'omics technologies, her work spans the Northeastern Pacific, St. Lawrence Estuary, and Canadian Arctic. Collaborations with Indigenous communities ensure research relevance for conservation and recovery efforts. She holds a PhD from the University of Victoria and has published extensively on contaminants in marine mammals, ecotoxicology, and climate change impacts.
Education: BSc (University of Natal, South Africa), BSc (Honours) (University of Guelph), MSc (Memorial University of Newfoundland), PhD (University of Victoria).
Research emphasizes ringed seals, belugas, and killer whales, addressing contaminant exposure, habitat use, and health responses to environmental shifts. Notable projects include studies on PCBs in Labrador seals, mercury dynamics in Arctic char, and tire-derived contaminants in Pacific salmon. Her lab (TBrownLab) also explores freshwater seal ecology in Labrador's Kangalaksiorvik Lake.
Scientific contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Advising students include PhD candidates Stephanie Holbert and Bonnie Lo, and MSc candidates Sandra Jaskowiak and Alexandra Gregg. Funding partners include NSERC and Indigenous organizations. Future work prioritizes Arctic ecosystem resilience, contaminant mitigation, and community-driven conservation strategies.
