Tanja Tajmel is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Engineering in Society, Concordia University, holding a Concordia University Research Chair (Tier 2) in Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in STEM. She also serves as Special Advisor to the Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
Her educational background includes:
- BSc in Physics and Meteorology, BA in Philosophy from Graz University of Technology, Karl-Franzens University in Graz, and University of Padova
- Master in Physics Education and Philosophy Education from Karl-Franzens University in Graz

Dr. Tajmel's research critically examines how STEM education perpetuates social inequity through linguistic barriers, postcolonial 'othering,' and neoliberal discourse frameworks. She investigates decolonizing methodologies in physics education and advocates for the human right to STEM education per the Berlin Declaration 2018, promoting hegemony-critical pedagogical approaches that challenge binary thinking in diversity initiatives.
Her research is supported by multiple grants:
- NSERC CREATE: "A Training Program on Development, Deployment and Servicing of AI-based Software Systems (CREATE SE4AI)" (2021-2026, $1,554,000) as co-applicant
- Concordia University Research Chair: "EDI in STEM" (2020-2025)
- FRQSC: "L'Autre dans les manuels scolaires de science" (2020-2023, $44,530) as PI
- Tri-Agency NFRF: "Decolonizing Light - Tracing Colonialism in Contemporary Physics" (2019-2022, $178,818) as PI
- Canadian Federation of Business School Deans: "EDI at STEM-Business Intersection" (2019, $11,500) as co-PI

Dr. Tajmel supervises seven graduate students across PhD and MASc programs with co-supervisors from Education, Computer Science, and São Paulo University. She directs the EDI Lab currently investigating Generative AI's implications for equity in higher education, with an active Research Assistant position open for Fall 2024.
