Tanja Bueltmann is a Professor of History at the University of Strathclyde, specializing in migration and diaspora studies. Her research focuses on immigrant community life, ethnic associations, and collective action among diasporic populations. She holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington (2009) and an MA from the University of Bielefeld (2005).
Current projects include the RSE-funded 'Transeuropean Scots: Scotland’s European Diaspora Post-Brexit in Longitudinal Perspective,' examining Scottish diaspora dynamics post-Brexit. She also leads the ESRC-funded 'European, Ethnic and Expatriate' project analyzing British and German social networks in Asia, and contributed to the AHRC-funded 'Hidden Diaspora' project on English communities in North America.
Her work bridges academia and policy, including advisory roles for the Scottish Government’s Scottish Connections Framework and the Scottish Arts and Humanities Alliance. Key research themes include diasporic identity formation, transnational community building, and the sociopolitical impacts of Brexit on diasporic populations.
Notable outputs include reports on EU citizens' post-Brexit identity and representation, and forthcoming work on translocal Scottish diaspora studies. She actively collaborates with NGOs, museums, and policymakers to translate academic insights into practical initiatives.
