Tammy Rinehart Kochel is a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU). She also serves as the Associate Dean for Research and Personnel in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Dr. Kochel specializes in applied research on police legitimacy, procedural justice, and evidence-based policing strategies, with a focus on hot spots policing, focused deterrence, and community efficacy in high-crime areas.
- Education: Ph.D. in Justice, Law and Crime Policy from George Mason University (2009); M.A. in Administration of Justice from SIU Carbondale.
Her recent work addresses gun violence, policing during unrest, and the long-term impacts of high-profile incidents like the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson. She led the CASTLE Community-Based Crime Reduction Grant project in St. Louis County and authored the book Policing Unrest: On the Front Lines of the Ferguson Protests, which won the 2023 Outstanding Book award from the American Society of Criminology's Policing Division.
