Tamara Keefner

Tamara Keefner is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nursing at the University of South Dakota, specializing in psychiatric mental health nursing and suicidology. Her academic work bridges research, teaching, and clinical practice.

• Education: PhD in Nursing Research (2019) and BS in Nursing (2013) from South Dakota State University, plus an Associate’s in Dental Hygiene (1990) from USD.

Keefner’s research focuses on destigmatizing mental illness, identifying risk factors for suicide progression, and improving nurse training protocols. She has developed evidence-based interventions for screening and assessment, particularly for adolescent populations. Recent publications highlight her work on suicide theories, emotional pain management, and SBIRT training implementation.
