Tamar Mitts is an Assistant Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. She is also a Faculty Member at the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, the Institute of Global Politics, and the Data Science Institute, reflecting her interdisciplinary engagement with security, technology, and policy.
Her research centers on emerging challenges at the intersection of technology and security. She investigates how militant and hate groups exploit digital platforms for recruitment and mobilization, how state and non-state actors manipulate media content to shape public opinion, and how technology companies respond to growing trust and safety concerns online.
Tamar Mitts’ work has been featured in major media outlets including The Washington Post, Boston Globe, Fortune, Vox, War on the Rocks, and Foreign Policy, underscoring the public relevance of her scholarship. Her book, Safe Havens for Hate: The Challenge of Moderating Online Extremism, offers a novel critique of current moderation practices, arguing that they often push extremist content to less visible but more resilient platforms, thereby exacerbating ideological entrenchment. She advocates for public policy solutions rather than relying solely on private platform governance to address online extremism.
She is actively involved in public discourse through speaking engagements coordinated via the PUP Speaks program, where she discusses how public policy can be leveraged to confront online extremism. Her interdisciplinary affiliations suggest a strong integration of political science, data science, and global security policy in her academic profile.
