Talis Putnins is a Professor in the Finance Discipline Group at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), serving as Chief Scientist of the Digital Finance Co-operative Research Centre (CRC) and a member of the Business Intelligence and Data Analytics Research Centre. His academic journey includes faculty positions at the University of Edinburgh, the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Columbia University, and New York University.
Education: PhD in Finance from the University of Sydney, B.Eng (IT&T) with Honors and B.Fin degrees from the University of Adelaide.
Research focuses on financial markets design, market microstructure, decentralized finance (DeFi), blockchain technology, and forensic finance topics like market manipulation and insider trading. He has published in top-tier journals including the Review of Financial Studies and Journal of Financial Economics.
Awarded Australian Research Council grants, including a Discovery Award and DECRA Fellowship. He advises governments, stock exchanges, DeFi projects, and serves as an expert witness in legal cases.
Current roles include leading the Digital Finance CRC’s research agenda and supervising PhD/Master’s students. His funded projects explore tokenization, automated market makers, and digital asset regulatory frameworks.
