Taina Sormunen is an Associate Professor, MD, and Registered Nurse at Sophiahemmet University working in the Department of Health Promotion Science. Her research focuses on communication patterns related to infertility and involuntary childlessness, particularly through digital platforms.
Her research interests center on understanding how individuals experiencing involuntary childlessness utilize social media for support and information sharing. She investigates communication patterns in blogs and Facebook groups to understand how these platforms help people process the emotional challenges of infertility. Her work aims to improve healthcare professionals' understanding of patients' information needs during fertility investigations and treatments.
Dr. Sormunen's research shows trends toward digital health communication and patient-centered approaches in reproductive healthcare. Her work bridges clinical practice with digital anthropology, examining how technology transforms traditional healthcare support systems for infertile couples.
She serves as Doctoral student representative in the Internationalization Council and in the Research Board at Sophiahemmet University. Her ongoing research project follows twenty-five infertility-focused blogs over three years to analyze communication patterns and coping strategies among women dealing with infertility.
