Thomas Maloney is a Professor of Economics at the University of Utah, serving as Department Chair from 2023–2026 and previously from 2011–2017. He also directed the Tanner Center for Human Rights from 2010–2019. His research focuses on applied economics, labor economics, migration, economic history, and racial inequality. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago's Center for the Study of Urban Inequality.
Maloney’s academic journey includes roles as an Assistant Professor (1994–2000) and Associate Professor (2000–2012) at the University of Utah. His work bridges historical and contemporary analyses of economic systems, emphasizing labor markets, migration patterns, and social inequality. Key research themes include Black-White economic disparities, gender gaps in STEM academia, and the impact of migration on sending countries.
His publications analyze topics like teacher unionization effects, frontier fertility patterns, and the historical management of race in industries. Maloney’s interdisciplinary approach combines demographic studies, economic historiography, and policy analysis to address systemic inequalities. His recent work examines socio-economic status and fertility decline, as well as obesity risk among immigrant populations in Utah.
