T. Michael Duncan is the Raymond G. Thorpe Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University's College of Engineering. He holds a B.S. from the University of Michigan (1975) and M.S./Ph.D. from Caltech (1977/1980). Prior to Cornell, he was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories (1980-1990).
Research Focus: Duncan utilizes Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to study molecular dynamics in heterogeneous catalysis, advanced materials, and soft matter systems. His work bridges chemical engineering with polymer physics, surface science, and planetary chemistry, including recent investigations of Titan's atmospheric formation through chondrite outgassing experiments.
Teaching & Advising: He teaches core chemical engineering courses including Chemical Process Design & Analysis (EngrD 2190), Chemical Kinetics & Reactor Design (ChemE 3900), and Chemical Engineering Processes Laboratory (ChemE 4220). His exceptional mentorship is recognized by 10+ advising awards.
