T. Alexander Aleinikoff is the Executive Dean of The New School for Social Research and a University Professor at The New School. He holds a JD from Yale Law School and a BA from Swarthmore College, where he also received an honorary Doctorate of Laws. His research focuses on immigration and refugee law, transnational law, citizenship, race, and constitutional law, with current projects addressing climate migration and international protection reforms.
Previously, he served as Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees at the UN (2010–2015), Dean of Georgetown University Law Center, and Director of The New School’s Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility (2017–2024). He has authored influential books like The Arc of Protection (2019) and Semblances of Sovereignty (2002), and co-hosts the Tempest Tossed and Entry Denied podcasts.
Awards include induction into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2014) and National Academy of the Arts and Sciences (2014). His recent work critiques global mobility regimes, U.S. immigration enforcement, and asylum policies. He teaches courses on U.S. immigration law and policy, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to migration challenges.
Future courses include Independent Study modules (Spring 2026 and Fall 2025) and a US Immigration Law course (Fall 2025). His academic contributions bridge law, public policy, and humanitarian advocacy, shaping debates on human mobility in the 21st century.
