Sören Nylin is a Professor of Animal Ecology in the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University's Faculty of Science. Previously serving as Section Dean of the Biology Section and Chair of the PhD Education Committee, he currently focuses on research and teaching in science theory and evolutionary ecology. His work centers on insect-plant interactions, particularly the evolution of host plant relationships in butterflies.
Dr. Nylin's research interests span evolutionary ecology, insect-plant interactions, phenotypic plasticity, and butterfly systematics. His work explores how insects adapt to different host plants, with particular focus on the oscillation hypothesis of host range evolution. He investigates the effects of temperature and photoperiod on insect life histories, the role of phenotypic plasticity in speciation and extinction processes, and employs phylogenetic analysis as a key tool in his research.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on butterfly-plant coevolution, with recent work examining genome-wide transcriptome changes, host range evolution, and climate change impacts on seasonal plasticity. The research reveals patterns where evolutionary history of host use, rather than plant phylogeny, determines gene expression in generalist butterflies, and demonstrates how phenotypic plasticity contributes to diversification in nymphalid butterflies.
