Prof. Sönke Hendrik Matthewes is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) of Applied Economics at Utrecht University's School of Economics. He holds affiliations as Research Associate at the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance and Research Affiliate at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics. Formerly, he was a Research Fellow at the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre and completed his PhD through the Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics.
His education includes a Master's in Public Policy Economics from the Barcelona GSE, a Bachelor's in Liberal Arts (Political Science & Economics) from Amsterdam University College, and postdoctoral work at the University of Potsdam.
Research focuses on school systems' impacts on student skills and labor market outcomes, particularly tracking systems and vocational curricula. Methodologically, he emphasizes applied econometrics for policy evaluation.
