Sylvie Hancil

Sylvie Hancil is an HDR Senior Lecturer at the University of Rouen Normandy, affiliated with the UFR Letters and Human Sciences and the ERIAC research unit (UR 4705). Her academic roles include supervising doctoral research and leading seminars on linguistic functioning and grammaticalization. She holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and specializes in grammaticalization, pragmatics, discourse analysis, and historical linguistics.

Research Focus: Her work centers on the evolution of discourse markers, syntactic structures, and diachronic language change. Key interests include the grammaticalization of particles like 'but' and 'like', the role of prosody in affective speech, and the interplay between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Recent studies explore Northern English dialects and transcategorial phenomena in cross-linguistic contexts.

Publications & Editorial Work: She has authored/co-edited books such as Final Particles (2015) and New Trends in Grammaticalization (2018). She serves on editorial boards for journals like Language Sciences and Folia Linguistica, and leads international collaborations via Erasmus programs with universities in Liverpool and Rome.

Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches L2 grammar, phonology, and the history of English language. Supervises doctoral candidates and organizes advanced seminars on linguistic theory and applied linguistics.
