Sylvia Gattas is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford within the Attention, Brain and Cognitive Development group. Her research focuses on the interplay between affective regulation, executive functions, and early numeracy, with particular emphasis on how children develop number sense and learning motivations. She employs behavioral, cognitive, and neurophysiological methodologies across home, school, and lab environments.
- Supervised by Professor Gaia Scerif and Dr. Alexandra Hendry
- Previously worked at the Math Brain Lab under Dr. Ian Lyons
- Collaborations include Anne Dowker, Krzysztof Cipora, and Dr. Harriger
Her 2021 NPJ: Science of Learning study demonstrated that math anxiety predicts both STEM course selection and academic performance independently of math ability. Current projects include the Nuffield Foundation-funded ONE Programme and Leverhulme Foundation research on attentional mechanisms in mathematics. She actively uses automated gaze scoring and online neurocognitive assessment tools to enhance research accessibility.
Key publication trends reveal consistent contributions to executive function development (2025), gaze tracking methodologies (2025), and math anxiety interventions (2023). Collaborative work spans neurophysiological assessment, visuospatial cognition, and educational neuroscience.
