Syeda ShahBano Ijaz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Diplomacy & World Affairs at Occidental College. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science (2023) from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), an M.A. in Politics from New York University (2018), an M.Sc. in Economics for Development from the University of Oxford (2015) as a Commonwealth Scholar, and a B.S. from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Her research focuses on the political economy of development, particularly the domestic consequences of foreign aid in South Asia, and challenges conventional narratives about foreign aid's impact on democratic institutions.
Her book project, 'Aiding Accountability: The Politics of Last-Mile Service Delivery in Pakistan', examines how bureaucratic and administrative barriers in aid distribution shape voter demands and localized accountability mechanisms. She has conducted over two years of fieldwork in Pakistan, highlighting marginalized groups' challenges (e.g., women with blurred fingerprints facing biometric verification hurdles). Her work has been supported by prestigious fellowships and grants, including those from Princeton’s Bobst Center, UCSD’s International Institute, and the American Institute of Pakistan Studies.
