Syed Zulfiqar Ali

Dr. Syed Zulfiqar Ali is a PhD Scholar at the Australian National University School of Medicine and Psychology and a seasoned public health professional with over 25 years of experience in policy development, health financing, and strategic planning across government and international organizations. His work bridges academic research with practical implementation in low- and middle-income contexts.

• Educational Background: MBBS (medical degree), MPHealth (Master of Public Health), and PhD in progress.

Dr. Ali’s research focuses on the political economy of universal health coverage (UHC), analyzing government-funded health insurance schemes in Pakistan and their implications for systemic reform. He employs mixed-method approaches, including stakeholder analyses, key informant interviews, and comparative case studies of health systems in Australia, Iran, and India.

His career spans roles as Chief Executive Officer of Aga Khan Health Service Pakistan, technical leadership in WHO and UNICEF projects, and advisory positions for entities like the World Bank, DFID, and KfW Development Bank. He specializes in integrating private sector influence into health policy frameworks.

Dr. Ali also contributes to capacity-building through two decades of experience as a Master Trainer for health professionals, with a focus on reproductive health and supervision mechanisms. His work at ANU is based in the Florey Building, Canberra.
