Sydney Barnes

Dr. Sydney Barnes serves as Group Head of the Stellar Activity research group within the Stellar Physics and Exoplanets section at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP). Barnes leads cutting-edge research on stellar rotation dynamics, magnetic activity cycles, and their applications in exoplanet characterization and stellar age determination through gyrochronology.

Barnes' research program centers on observational studies of stellar rotation evolution across diverse stellar populations. By analyzing open clusters of varying ages (including NGC 2281, NGC 6709, M 67, and NGC 3532), Barnes investigates angular momentum loss mechanisms and establishes precise rotation-age relationships. Significant contributions include the discovery of Hale-like magnetic cycles in solar twins such as 18 Scorpii, providing critical insights into stellar dynamo processes. Current work integrates TESS photometry with ground-based spectroscopy to study grazing exoplanet systems and characterize stellar activity signatures that impact exoplanet detection.
