Dr. Svitlana Krys is an Associate Professor and Discipline Advisor in the Department of English at MacEwan University. She holds a PhD (2011) and MA from the University of Alberta. Her academic focus lies in comparative literature, with specializations in Ukrainian, Slavic, and Gothic studies. She served as editor-in-chief of East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies (2016–23) and held the Kule Chair in Ukrainian Studies (2015–21). Her research explores Ukrainian Gothic literature, postcolonial theory, and gender studies, supported by awards like the American Association for Ukrainian Studies Best Article Prize.
Education: PhD (Alberta, 2011); MA (Alberta).
Research interests include the Gothic genre in Ukrainian literature, Slavic vampire symbolism, and intersections between postcolonial and feminist theories. Courses taught reflect her expertise: Reading Gender: The Female Gothic, Postcolonial Literature, and World Literature. She regularly contributes to scholarly journals and has been recognized for her editorial leadership through grants from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
Grants and Awards: Received multiple fellowships including the Helen Darcovich Doctoral Fellowship and Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship. Her editorial work for East/West was supported by a sustained grant program.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies network and serves on its Council of Directors. Member of professional associations including the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages and the International Gothic Association.
