Dr. Sven Simon is a Professor and Director of Teaching Effectiveness in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology, part of the College of Sciences. He specializes in planetary and space physics, focusing on magnetospheric dynamics of outer solar system bodies like Jupiter and Saturn moons, Pluto, and Mercury. His research integrates numerical plasma simulations, analytical modeling, and spacecraft data analysis.
Simon holds a Habilitation (2012) and Venia Legendi in Geophysics from the University of Cologne, a PhD (2007) in Natural Sciences from the University of Braunschweig, and a Diploma in Physics (2004) from the same institution. He has been recognized with the Heinrich Büssing Award (2010) for scientific excellence and the Albertus-Magnus Award (2010) for teaching innovation.
His research group explores plasma interactions at moons such as Europa, Callisto, and Triton, with recent highlights including studies of Pluto’s induced magnetosphere and ENA emissions at icy moons. He advises PhD students like Randy Ruch and C. Michael Haynes, contributing to NASA missions like Juno and the upcoming JUICE mission to Jupiter's icy moons.
Simon’s work addresses fundamental questions about moon-magnetosphere interactions, plasma wake formation, and energetic particle dynamics. His lab develops tools like the hybrid code AIKEF and backtracing models for ENA analysis, advancing understanding of small-body plasma environments across the solar system.
