Sven Buerki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Boise State University, part of The College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on plant systematics, phylogenetics, and biogeography, with a particular emphasis on tropical and island flora. He holds a PhD and Master’s from the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland.
His work centers on understanding evolutionary patterns in plant families like Sapindaceae and Pandanaceae, often involving fieldwork in biodiversity hotspots such as Madagascar and Borneo. Notable contributions include describing new species (e.g., Benstonea fortuita and B. serpentinica) and advancing conservation strategies for endemic taxa. Buerki employs molecular phylogenetics and integrative taxonomy to resolve taxonomic uncertainties and inform conservation efforts.
Recent publications highlight his expertise in ultramafic soil adaptations, species delimitation, and the impacts of historical climate changes on plant diversification. Collaborations with institutions globally underscore his interdisciplinary approach to plant science.
