Sven Bergmann

Sven Bergmann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computational Biology at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine, University of Lausanne (UNIL), and a group leader at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). He was appointed to this position on August 1, 2010, after joining UNIL in 2005 as a conditional pre-tenure assistant professor.

His research lies at the intersection of computational biology and genetics, with a focus on large-scale data analysis and modeling of biological systems. Bergmann has made significant contributions through the CoLaus cohort study, identifying correlations between genetic and geographic distances in populations and conducting genome-wide association studies to discover disease-related genes. His group has developed advanced algorithms to uncover hidden gene-drug relationships in cancer research, aiding in the prioritization of therapeutic targets.

Bergmann's work also extends to developmental biology, where he uses computational models to study embryonic segmentation in fruit flies and coordinated organ formation, particularly within the national SystemsX.ch initiative. This research aims to advance understanding of diseases like cancer and support the development of artificial tissues.
