Dr. Suzanne Hawley is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Wichita State University and former department chair (2011-2015). She also serves as faculty at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and co-directed the Kansas Public Health Leadership Institute (KPHLI). A clinical psychologist with a dual background in public health and psychology, Hawley focuses on community-driven health interventions, mental health literacy, and leadership in public health systems.
Education includes bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology from California State University, San Bernardino, followed by an MPH in Biostatistics and a PhD in clinical psychology from Loma Linda University. Her career spans clinical and research roles in diverse settings, including community mental health, psychiatric hospitals, and prisons.
Research interests emphasize public health leadership, mental health crisis preparedness, and addressing disparities in vulnerable populations. Recent work explores aging education, suicide prevention, and cultural factors in healthcare decisions.
Her publications reflect expertise in public health training, community-based participatory research, and workforce development. Notable contributions include studies on refugee health education, e-learning for public health professionals, and pediatric epilepsy in rural areas.
