Suvranu De serves as the Google Endowed Dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Previously, he held the J. Erik Jonsson Distinguished Professorship and chaired the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He earned a B.E. from Jadavpur University (1993), M.E. from the Indian Institute of Science (1995), and Sc.D. from MIT (2001), all in mechanical engineering. His research focuses on
- Multiscale modeling
- Soft tissue mechanics
- Scientific quantum computing
- Virtual reality in healthcare
- Noninvasive neuroimaging
- AI-driven surgical training
Key achievements include the 2022 Edwin F. Church Medal for academic leadership, Test-of-Time Award (2024), and J. Tinsley Oden Medal (2019). He leads editorial roles in journals like Frontiers of Neuroergonomics and chairs committees for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Notable contributions include developing VR-based surgical simulators, neuroimaging tools for skill assessment, and quantum computing algorithms for engineering problems. His work bridges computational mechanics, healthcare innovation, and AI.
