Sutapa Chakrabarti

Sutapa Chakrabarti is a Group Leader at the Biochemistry Department, Freie Universität Berlin, focusing on mRNA metabolism and post-transcriptional gene regulation. Her research investigates how cis-acting signals in mRNA interact with protein factors to direct transcripts toward specific degradation pathways, using biochemical and structural approaches.

• Current Research: Elucidating mechanisms of mRNA decay via Nonsense-Mediated Decay (NMD), ARE-mRNA decay, and Staufen-mediated decay.
• Funding: Supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and Freie Universität Berlin research commission.
• Recent Publications: 2025 study on MOV10 helicase in NMD, 2024 analysis of SARS-CoV-2 N protein’s role in mRNA decay, and 2022 work on UPF1-UPF2 interactions.
