Susumu Kitagawa is a Distinguished Professor at Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS), which he co-founded and currently directs. A Foreign Member of the Royal Society (ForMemRS), he is renowned for pioneering work in coordination chemistry.
His research focuses on:
- Design of functional porous coordination polymers (PCPs)
- Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable porosity
- Gas storage and separation technologies
- Development of stimuli-responsive materials
Kitagawa has received numerous awards including the Japan Academy Prize and Wolf Prize in Chemistry. His work has established fundamental principles for creating next-generation porous materials with applications in clean energy and environmental remediation.
