Susanne Höfner is a Professor at Uppsala University's Department of Physics and Astronomy (Astronomy and Space Physics division). Her research program focuses on physical properties of evolved stars, particularly dynamical processes including stellar pulsation, stellar winds, and stardust formation. She develops advanced radiation-hydrodynamical models to interpret observational data, with current work supported by an ERC Advanced Grant for her project EXWINGS: EXplaining the WINds of cool Giant and Supergiant stars with global 3D models.
Her primary research interests include:
- Dynamics of evolved stars and stellar winds
- Formation mechanisms of stardust in stellar environments
- Development of 3D radiation-hydrodynamical simulations
- Observational constraints for cool giant and supergiant stars
- Atmospheric modeling of AGB stars
Her recent publications predominantly explore:
- 3D simulations of AGB star pulsations and winds
- Dust formation processes in carbon-rich giants
- Observational validations using ALMA and VLTI data
- Atmospheric dynamics of red supergiants
- Mass-loss mechanisms in evolved stellar systems
Höfner leads a research group focused on stellar evolution modeling and maintains active collaborations in several international observational astronomy projects. She secured significant funding through her ERC Advanced Grant to support computational astrophysics research on stellar winds.
