Susannah Soon is an Associate Professor at Curtin University's School of Electrical Engineering, Computing, and Mathematical Sciences. She holds roles in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and serves as Academic Lead for the Office of the Provost. Her positions include Unit Coordinator for Masters of Computing Project Units and New Product Development. She has held leadership roles such as Academic Lead at Curtin-Cisco Innovation Central Perth and manager of the Curtin-Optus 5G Lab.
Education: PhD in Artificial Intelligence (University of Melbourne), B.Eng (Hons) in Engineering (UWA).
Research Interests: Focus on demand-driven AI applications in health, social impact, defence, and sustainability. Current projects include the Healthy Connections telehealth initiative for remote communities using AI and satellite tech, VR digital twins for energy efficiency, and endangered language preservation via machine translation. Her work emphasizes human-centered design and industry collaboration.
Grants & Projects: Recent funding includes $1.5M for the SoundSmiles mental health project, $200K for The Challenge: Reimagining Regional Healthcare, and $50K for generative AI in ultrasound imaging. Projects often involve partnerships with Ear Science Institute Australia, Optus, and WA Health.
