Susannah Gent is a Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Production at Sheffield Hallam University, based in the Department of Media Arts and Communication within the College of Social Sciences and Arts. She holds a Ph.D. in Creative Practice Research (2019) from the same university, focusing on the intersection of neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and hauntology. Her work bridges experimental filmmaking with academic research, exploring themes like subjectivity, uncanny spaces, and cinematic representation.
Education includes a BA in Graphic Design, Film, and Animation (Liverpool John Moores University, 1992) and an MA in Film & Television Production (Sheffield Hallam University, 1996). She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2008).
Research interests span experimental film techniques, hauntology, and the relationship between physical/psychological spaces. Her films, including Unhomely Street and Haruspex, have garnered international acclaim at festivals like Oberhausen and Kassel. She leads projects such as the Walking Arts Research Group, exploring embodied creativity through walking and film. Recent works include an adaptation of Nicholas Royle’s The Cellar and an essay film on the sublime.
Awards include the Best Film Award at the 2005 Britspotting Showcase and recognition at Oberhausen. Ongoing projects involve interdisciplinary collaborations, including the SOLAR walking app and academic publications on cinematic space.
