Susanna Maria Cafaro is a Full Professor of European Union Law at the University of Salento, Department of Legal Sciences, where she has held a Jean Monnet Chair ad personam since September 1, 2019. She teaches European Union Law and European Immigration and Asylum Law in the Law program, as well as European Security and Defense Policy in the International Cooperation Sciences program. Her academic career spans over two decades at the University of Salento, where she has progressively advanced from researcher to full professor.
Her research interests focus on European Union institutional law, European Migration and Asylum Law, external relations of the European Union, substantive law of the Union (particularly economic and monetary policy), international economic law, and citizenship, participation, and democracy in the European Union. Her work explores supranational governance models and democratic global governance frameworks.
Professor Cafaro's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on democratic evolution within European institutions, the challenges of economic governance, and the role of law in shaping supranational democracy. Her work bridges legal scholarship with political theory, examining how European integration can serve as a model for global governance challenges. She has particularly examined the Euro crisis, European Central Bank's evolving role, and the relationship between the EU and international organizations.

Professor Cafaro actively supervises theses in European Union Law, requiring course attendance and a minimum exam score of 28/30. She has been involved in various academic committees, including serving as vice president of the Italian Society of International Law (SIDI) from 2019 to 2021. She is also the organizer of the Supranational Democracy Dialogue, which brings together academics, civil society representatives, and institutions to discuss global challenges requiring continental-scale solutions.
Her academic work is complemented by practical experience as a lawyer since 1997, with previous positions at the Legal Service of the Council of the European Union in Brussels and the legal office of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt.
