Susana Vinga is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. She also holds a Senior Researcher position at INESC-ID's IDSS lab. Her research focuses on systems biology, computational methods for personalized medicine, and the integration of dynamic modeling with clinical data analysis.
Education: PhD in Biology/Bioinformatics from ITQB/UNL (2005), Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (1999), and a specialization in Probability and Statistics from the same institution. She participated in an ERASMUS program at Politecnico di Milano (1998-99).
Research interests include: dynamic modeling of biological systems, machine learning applications in healthcare, metabolic network analysis, and the development of computational tools for genomic data interpretation. She leads projects like OLISSIPO (EU-funded) and PERSEIDS (FCT-funded), focusing on computational biology and cancer systems biology.
Awards include the 2010 Prémios Jovens Investigadores UTL/Deloitte and 2017 Prémio Científico da Universidade de Lisboa/Caixa Geral de Depósitos. She organized the RECOMB'2010 conference in Lisbon.
Grants and roles: PI of multiple national/international grants (e.g., EU Horizon 2020, FCT), co-investigator in projects like HIVCONTROL and DYNAMO. She advises students in interdisciplinary areas combining engineering and life sciences.
Labs/Teams: Active in INESC-ID's Systems Biology group and collaborates with institutions like Los Alamos National Laboratory and Georgia Tech. Her work spans from theoretical modeling to clinical applications in oncology and infectious diseases.
