Susan Sgorbati is a Professor at Bennington College and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Action (CAPA), serving as Interim Director of the MFA in Public Action since Fall 2022. A professional mediator and choreographer, she integrates creative research with social activism across disciplines and borders. Her work focuses on conflict resolution, emergent improvisation theory, and systemic change.
Her research interests center on Emergent Improvisation, a framework analyzing group dynamics and complex systems inspired by neuroscience and complexity science collaborations with Dr. Gerald Edelman and Dr. Stuart Kauffman. She applies this to social justice, environmental governance, and education.
- Founded Bennington’s Conflict Resolution Program (2001)
- Co-founded Quantum Leap (1999–2019) to re-engage at-risk students
- Launched TWIN (Transboundary Water In-Cooperation Network) and Southern Vermont Regional Food System Network
- Developed CAPA’s 'Building Regenerative and Resilient Communities' program
She holds the Barbara and Lewis Jones Chair for Social Activism (2002–present), recognizing her groundbreaking social programs. Over 40 years, she has been a dancer, choreographer, and dance faculty leader at Bennington, emphasizing collaborative creative processes. Past roles include Dean of Faculty (1991–1994).
