Susan Promes

Susan Promes, MD, MBA, is a tenured Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center since 2014. She previously served at the University of California San Francisco as Vice Chair for Education and Residency Program Director. Her expertise spans emergency medicine education, clinical guidelines, and medical education innovation.

Education: MD from Penn State College of Medicine (1991), Emergency Medicine Residency at Alameda County Medical Center (1995).

Research interests focus on emergency medicine education methodologies, clinical practice guidelines for emergency physicians, and advancing educational tools like board review materials. She edits the journal Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training and has published extensively on topics such as acute coronary syndromes management and carbon monoxide poisoning protocols.

Notable recognition includes the 2020 Hal Jayne Excellence in Education Award. Her recent work emphasizes integrating coaching and mentoring strategies in medical training, as well as critical clinical policy development for emergency departments.
