Associate Professor Susan Parham is the Head of Urbanism and Planning at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Life and Medical Sciences (LMS), leading the Geography, Environment and Planning (GEP) subject group. She directs the University of Hertfordshire Urbanism Unit and served as Academic Director of the International Garden Cities Institute (IGCI) from 2015–2022. Her research focuses on food systems, urban design, Garden Cities/New Towns, and nature-based solutions for sustainable urbanism. Parham holds degrees from the London School of Economics, including a PhD in urban sociology, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). She co-edits the Journal of Urbanism and has led international projects like the Edible Cities Network and the Venice Sustainable Urbanism Summer School.
Her teaching spans urbanism principles, Garden City pedagogy, and stakeholder engagement, with roles as Programme Leader for Sustainable Planning and guest lecturer at Oxford and Glasgow universities. Notable publications include Food and Urbanism: The Convivial City (2015) and co-editing Exploring Food and Urbanism (2021). Recent work includes symposium proceedings on resilient food spaces and presentations on Garden City education at the Sorbonne and Suresnes. Parham collaborates with global institutions like Universiti Malaysia Putra and École Nationale Supérieure d’architecture de Grenoble, emphasizing international partnerships for sustainable urban development.
