Susan M. Hannum, PhD, MA, is an Associate Research Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Department of Health, Behavior and Society. She is affiliated with the Center for Qualitative Studies in Health and Medicine. Her research focuses on aging populations and chronic illnesses, particularly cancer survivorship and qualitative methodologies for understanding patient experiences.
Dr. Hannum holds a PhD and MA from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (2013 and 2005). Her work emphasizes socio-cultural aspects of chronic illness management and patient-reported outcomes in healthcare systems.
Her research interests include gerontology, cancer care, qualitative oncology research, and healthcare quality improvement. Recent studies explore telehealth efficacy during pandemics, doctor-patient communication ethics, and infection control in home-infusion settings.
She leads projects like the Home Infusion Collaborative to eliminate CLABSI and participates in initiatives promoting health equity through language humanization in electronic records.
